Wildlife at the Inn
Innkeeper Jerri Hagman has a love of
the desert wildlife and plants. The
Homestead Inn is an active member of the
Desert Tortoise Rescue Program since
1995, when they started their own
sanctuary on the Inn premises. Tortoises
are cared for and watched over and the
staff takes great pride in their efforts
to protect and preserve one of our
desert’s great natural wonders. We have
witnessed five generations of tortoises,
and we currently have six babies from
this season that visitors can view.

Thanks to a helping hand from the caring folks at the Inn, each Tortoise will go on to help preserve it’s species and live a long and healthy life. Roadside trash, pesticides, encroachment and uneducated visitors cause more Tortoise deaths each year than natural predators.
If you want to learn more about the
Desert Tortoise contact Desert Tortoise Rescue at, (760) 369-1235.

We have many birds on the premises,
including Roadrunners, Cactus Wrens,
many species of Hummingbird, Dove and
Quail. Wildlife includes lizards, the
occasional coyote, Cottontail and Jack
Rabbits--which you may come upon on an
early morning or late afternoon stroll
through our "Serenity Gardens". Our
gardens have several species of cactus
and other native plants.
